We can’t rely on WASSCE to admit students into Colleges of Education – NTC to GNAT

The management of the National Teaching Council has disclosed that Colleges of Education can’t rely anymore on the West Africa Senior schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result to admit students into the Colleges of Education.

Following the call by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in their press statement on 8th February 2022 that the role of the National Teaching Council is to advise the minister of Education on teachers’ improvement and transformation and not to implement policies in Education.

The Registrar at the National Teaching Council, Dr. Christian Addai Opoku speaking at the 12th Congregation of the Atebubu College of Education stated that the entrance Examination for Colleges of education is scheduled to take place in August 2022 is to ensure that WASSCE graduates entering colleges of Education are qualified.

According to him, colleges of Education need an Education system that does not rely solely on WASSCE results of applicants for admission but something in addition to seeing whether the person is fully qualified to be trained as a teacher.

He explained that Colleges of Education could have an entrance examination followed by an interview to ensure that the system is solid.

Dr. Christian Addai poku believes the Ghana Basic Education skills Examination Test will ensure that colleges of Education will produce quality teachers for Ghana.

According to him, the Colleges of education entrance are Education reforms proposed by the NTC to harmonize teacher Education admission in the country and also to improve teacher Education as part of the National Education Reforms.
