The Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) is a leading healthcare provider in Queensland, offering a full spectrum of obstetric and maternity services to support women throughout pregnancy, birth, and postnatal care. Whether you are expecting your first baby or managing a high-risk pregnancy, RBWH provides expert care tailored to your needs.
What Obstetric Services Does RBWH Offer?
RBWH’s obstetrics services encompass a range of specialized care options, including:
- Maternity Outpatient Clinics: Located on the ground floor of the Ned Hanlon Building, these clinics provide antenatal care, pregnancy monitoring, and education. Appointments are available Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
- Birth Suite and Birth Centre: Situated on Level 5 of the Ned Hanlon Building, the Birth Suite offers comprehensive labor and delivery services. The Birth Centre provides a more homelike environment for low-risk pregnancies, featuring facilities such as birthing pools and support for water births.
- Women’s Obstetric Review Centre (ORC): A 24/7 service for pregnancy-related emergencies and clinical advice. Women experiencing symptoms such as broken waters, vaginal bleeding, labor contractions, or decreased fetal movement can call the ORC at (07) 3647 3931 for immediate support.
- Postnatal Ward 6B: Located on Level 6, this ward cares for mothers and newborns after delivery, with visiting hours from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
- Lactation Service: Also on Level 6, opposite Ward 6B, this service offers breastfeeding support and education to new mothers.
Care Models and Support
RBWH offers various models of care to suit different preferences and pregnancy complexities:
- Midwifery Care: A dedicated team of midwives provides continuous support throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
- GP-Shared Care: Care is shared between your general practitioner and the hospital’s maternity team.
- Specialist Care: For high-risk pregnancies requiring specialist obstetricians and multidisciplinary input.
Preparing for Your Pregnancy Journey at RBWH
If you suspect you are pregnant, the first step is to visit your GP or a private midwife who can confirm the pregnancy and arrange referral to RBWH if needed. After referral, you will complete an online registration and receive your first appointment details.
At your initial appointment, a midwife will discuss the pregnancy stages, schedule check-ups, and provide your Pregnancy Health Record, which guides your antenatal care.
Additional Support Programs
- Healthy Lifestyle Phone Coaching: Free telephone support for women with higher BMI or rapid pregnancy weight gain, helping maintain a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy.
- Nurture Your Bump Workshop: Run by experienced maternity dietitians, this workshop offers nutrition guidance to support healthy fetal growth.
