UniMelb exchange

Dreaming of expanding your horizons while earning credit towards your degree? The University of Melbourne’s exchange program offers students the chance to immerse themselves in a new culture, experience a different academic system, and gain a truly global perspective—all while staying enrolled at UniMelb and paying your usual tuition fees.

What is the UniMelb Exchange Program

The exchange program at the University of Melbourne allows you to study at one of over 200 partner institutions in more than 35 countries for either a semester or a full academic year. You remain a UniMelb student, continue to pay your tuition fees to Melbourne, and receive full administrative support throughout the process. This means you can focus on making the most of your international adventure without worrying about transferring credits or unexpected costs at the host university.

Types of Overseas Study Programs

UniMelb offers a variety of overseas study options, including:

  • Semester and Year-Long Exchange: Study at a partner university for one or two semesters, with credits counting towards your Melbourne degree.
  • Short-Term Programs: Participate in summer or winter programs abroad for a shorter, intensive experience.
  • University of Melbourne Overseas Subjects (UMOS): Take single subjects taught overseas by UniMelb faculties.
  • Non-Credit Programs: Gain international experience and develop skills without academic assessment.
  • Research Opportunities: Graduate researchers can undertake overseas study from a few weeks to a year.

How Does the Exchange Program Work?

  • Tuition: You pay your regular UniMelb tuition fees (including HELP if applicable) and do not pay tuition to the host institution
  • Credit Transfer: Courses taken overseas are credited towards your UniMelb degree, provided your study plan is approved in advance.
  • Support: Education Abroad Advisers guide you through the process, from choosing a destination to transferring credits when you return.
  • Scholarships: Various scholarships and funding options are available, especially for language students and those in need of financial assistance.
