The Gordon Institute of TAFE is a cornerstone of technical and vocational education in Victoria, Australia, primarily serving the broader Geelong area. Established in 1887 and celebrating over 130 years of academic service in 2017, The Gordon has built a reputation as a leading provider of practical, career-focused education.

A Pillar in the Community

Each year, The Gordon welcomes more than 13,500 students, making it one of the most prominent educational institutions in the region. With over 500 dedicated staff, it also stands as one of Geelong’s major employers. Its campuses are strategically located across Geelong City, East Geelong, Werribee, and Hoppers Crossing, offering accessibility and flexibility to its diverse student population. Notably, about 60% of the student body resides within the wider Geelong region, emphasizing The Gordon’s deep community roots.

Courses and Campuses

The Gordon offers a broad spectrum of over 350 accredited courses, covering areas such as business, construction, design, health, technology, and more. The institution’s practical approach to training ensures that students are well-prepared to enter the workforce with hands-on skills and industry-ready qualifications. Its modern facilities, expert educators, and strong industry connections contribute to a learning environment that supports both personal and professional growth.

A Rich History of Innovation

The origins of The Gordon trace back to a community initiative in 1885, where local leaders sought to honor General Charles George Gordon by establishing a school of art. This vision materialized with the laying of the foundation stone for Davidson Hall in 1887. When the doors officially opened in January 1888 under the name Gordon Memorial Technical College, it welcomed 63 students studying subjects like mechanical drawing and architecture.

Significant expansions followed over the decades. Notable milestones include the construction of key buildings on Fenwick Street in the 1890s and the development of the Moorabool Street campus in the early 20th century. In 1921, the college was renamed the Gordon Institute of Technology, signaling its broader academic scope. Throughout the 20th century, the institute added new laboratories, lecture halls, and modern facilities to meet growing demands.

A major transition occurred in 1976 when the higher education components of The Gordon merged with the State College of Victoria at Geelong, forming what is now Deakin University. However, The Gordon remained as a stronghold for vocational education, continuing to expand its campuses and course offerings under the name Gordon Technical College, later rebranded as Gordon Institute of TAFE.

Continuing the Mission

Today, The Gordon remains committed to empowering students with real-world skills and knowledge. It is known for fostering strong ties with industry partners, ensuring that its training is aligned with current job market needs. Whether you’re looking to start a new career, gain a qualification, or upgrade your skills, The Gordon provides the tools and support to help students succeed.
