The story of Box Hill Institute began with two local technical schools — one for girls, established in 1924, and another for boys in 1943 — in the Melbourne suburb of Box Hill. These schools laid the foundation for what would evolve into a comprehensive and innovative educational institution. After decades of development and several significant mergers and rebrandings, Box Hill Institute officially took its current name in 1995. In 2013, a new constitution solidified its structure, and today, the Institute continues to operate under the Education and Training Reform Act 2006.
Over time, BHI expanded beyond its local origins to serve a wider audience, with campuses in Box Hill, Lilydale, and central Melbourne. The opening of the Lilydale Lakeside campus in 2016 marked a strategic effort to increase access for students in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. BHI also shares facilities with the Centre for Adult Education (CAE), further broadening its reach and course offerings.
A Diverse Range of Programs
Box Hill Institute offers over 200 courses across certificates, diplomas, and degrees, with qualifications that are recognized both in Australia and internationally. From secondary school education to vocational and higher education programs, BHI caters to a wide range of students — including school leavers, career changers, and professionals seeking upskilling.
The Institute also delivers training in real-world environments, with over 10 workplace training facilities and modern, industry-standard tools and technology. This commitment to hands-on learning ensures that students graduate with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise. In fact, 77.7% of BHI graduates secure employment within six months of completing their studies, and nearly 88% of apprentices or trainees find jobs post-training — figures that highlight the success of BHI’s employment-focused approach.
Global Reach and International Recognition
Today, BHI extends its services beyond Australia, operating in four countries and partnering with over 20 international institutions. Its global alumni network is over 10,000 strong, with graduates making meaningful contributions in diverse industries around the world. The Institute’s efforts in international education have been recognized with multiple Australian Training Awards, including the International Training Provider of the Year (2013 and 2018) and Large Training Provider of the Year (2016).
