The roots of CQUniversity date back to 1967, when it began as the Queensland Institute of Technology (Capricornia). The institution emerged from decades of local advocacy for regional tertiary education, particularly in Rockhampton, where industrial growth and community determination sparked a call for decentralised learning. From its modest beginnings with just 71 students, the university steadily evolved, achieving full university status in 1992 as the University of Central Queensland before adopting the name Central Queensland University in 1994. Today, it proudly operates under the modern brand CQUniversity Australia.

A Truly National University

While its main campus is based in the Norman Gardens area of Rockhampton, CQUniversity’s presence extends far and wide. Students can attend campuses in:

  • Queensland: Bundaberg, Cairns, Emerald, Gladstone (South and Callemondah), Mackay (City and Ooralea), Noosa, Rockhampton (City and North)
  • Other States: Adelaide (SA), Brisbane (QLD), Melbourne (VIC), Perth (WA), Sydney (NSW), and Townsville (QLD)

Additionally, CQUniversity collaborates with a network of Regional University Centres to support students in remote areas, offering infrastructure and academic assistance for those studying via distance education.

Growth and Innovation

Over the decades, CQUniversity has transformed into a dual-sector university, a milestone achieved through its 2014 merger with CQ TAFE. This merger made CQUniversity Queensland’s first university to deliver both vocational education and university-level qualifications under one banner. As a result, it now offers over 300 qualifications, ranging from certificates to doctoral degrees.

The university has expanded its academic offerings across a broad spectrum of fields, including:

  • Health sciences (e.g., physiotherapy, podiatry, medical imaging)
  • Engineering and built environment
  • Business, law, and accounting
  • Creative arts and digital media
  • Social work and community services
  • Education and humanities
  • Information technology and science

CQUniversity has also emerged as a pioneer in distance learning, with a significant portion of its student population enrolled online—a reflection of its founding philosophy of inclusion and accessibility.

Social Impact and Recognition

CQUniversity is internationally recognised as a Changemaker Campus by Ashoka U, highlighting its commitment to social innovation and community engagement. This prestigious accreditation aligns with the university’s goal of fostering a more inclusive and equitable society through education.

In recent years, the university has focused on regional health development. In 2018, it initiated plans to establish a medical school at its Rockhampton and Bundaberg campuses in partnership with Central Queensland and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services—an ambitious project to address healthcare needs in regional Queensland.
