The National Council of the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT has called on the Government, parents, and the general public to recognize the proper status of teachers.
In a meeting that was held on the 6th to 14th of November 2021, the National Council of Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, the council said they have noted that most teachers have been maltreated by students and parents leading to the complete disregard of respect to teachers.
The Council said they have registered their displeasure on the unruly behaviors of some students to school authorities, teachers, and sometimes some students leading to injuries and sometimes deaths. The Council finds this attitude of students towards their teachers uncouth and therefore wants students to demonstrate some modicum of respect to their school authorities and their teachers so that they can be able to co-exist peacefully in the school environment. They, therefore, call for a policy to curb this unruly behavior among students in schools.
The Council said the rampant attacks of teachers by students and their parents are worrying since teachers are the critical stakeholders of society. With this regards the Council has called for every possible effort to make positive cooperation between teachers and parents in the interest of pupils and thus protecting teachers from any assault and battery by parents, guardians, and the general public which has become the vogue in recent times.
Teachers need sound minds and freedom from any parents or guardians’ interference in the delivery of their duties and for that matter, there should be protected from assault.
