Government must Expedite Action on the Constitution of Boards of Education Sector -Eduwatch.

The management of the Africa Education watch, an Education policy think thank has called on the government to speed up the process in constituting a board of the Education sector.

Below are some of the reasons for their call.

  1. 1. Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) works with governments, civil society and the
    private sector to promote an equitable, accountable and responsive education system
    that assures quality and equal opportunities for all.
  2. 2. Ghana’s education sector is in the middle of an education reform that is not without
    challenges, especially in the new Standard Based Curriculum roll-out process. The
    need for strategic direction by Boards of the agencies under the Ministry of Education
    more) is crucial to the continuous and successful management of the reform process.
  3. 3. Seven (7) months into the President’s second term, almost all pre-tertiary agencies
    under the MoE still do not have Governing Boards, a situation which is seriously
    affecting their governance, oversight, the delivery of services to the public and the

state.

  1. 4. The TVET Service for instance, as established in the Pre-tertiary Education Act of
    2020 (Act 1049) is pivotal in the government’s strategy to harmonize under the MoE, the
    management of all public Technical and Vocational Institutes (TVIs) Currently
    operating under various Ministries. The operationalization of the TVET Service will
    pave way for the inclusion of students in these TVIs unto the free SHS/Free TVET
    program. However, eight (8) months since the issuance of executive assent to the
    Act, the establishment of the Governing Board of the TVET Service, together with
    the entire institutional operationalization has suffered considerable delay. This delay
    is affecting the timely execution of the government’s TVET reforms, including the free
    TVET program, raising questions on whether students in these TVIs will enjoy
    free TVET in the coming academic year.
  2. 5. Eduwatch respectfully calls on the Presidency and MoE to expedite action on the
    constitution of all Governing Boards in the education sector to provide the needed
    strategic leadership and oversight in furtherance of the ongoing reform and the
    delivery of quality social services.
