On Thursday May 6th, 2021, the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) had a successful stakeholder engagement on textbook assessment at Accra College of Education, in the Greater Accra Region. Over ninety publishers and writers from forty publishing houses across the country participated. Mr. Michael Nsowah, a former Director- General of the Ghana Education Service and Dr. Samuel Awikene Atintono, the principal of Accra College of Education were also present.
The purpose was to educate publishers and writers on textbook assessment in order to improve the quality of teaching and learning materials that support the Implementation of the standards-based curriculum.
Key takeaways include:
- NaCCA is mandated by the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023) to approve teaching and learning materials for use in pre-tertiary schools, excluding technical and vocational institutions in Ghana.
- Teaching and learning materials include:
• Textbooks
• Supplementary materials (readers, e-learning materials, non-text materials such as manipulatives, games, puzzles, number/letter/word/sentence cards etc.) - Book assessment and approval go through four (4) stages:
• Submission stage
• Assessment stage
• Verification stage
• Approval stage - Textbooks go through content and technical assessment before approval.
- NaCCA is committed to organise regular trainings on the interpretation of the curriculum for publishers and writers.
- Publishers must develop content that promote critical thinking and STEM education.
- Publishers who may have challenges downloading curriculum and textbook submission guidelines from the NaCCA website can request for them via email.
- Publishers must employ professional content developers to ensure quality textbooks.
