The National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT has called on the government to do the needful by abolishing the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination.
Speaking to the media, the president of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Mr. Angel Cabonu, stated the only idea behind the licensure Examination is to restrict a large number of teachers from entering the classroom after they have completed colleges of education.
According to Mr. Angel Cabonu, the position of the union is not that they are against the licensing of teachers but they are only saying if a teacher trainee can complete his or her course from the college of education he or she should be license and allow to teach and not compulsorily writing licensure Examination before they are qualified to teach.
He liken Ghanaian lawyers to teachers, Mr. Angel Cabonu said when law Students in Ghana complete the Ghana School of Law do the written exam before they are allowed to practice? and is the government saying that because Lawyers do not write exams after law school then they are not Good? Then so to teachers, he said the license exam does add anything to the teacher but just denied Teachers the opportunity to teach.
Minority in parliament has also called the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination has deliberate attempt by the government to distort monies from the teachers and therefore call the government abolished the license Examination.
