Most teachers have complained about the controversial deduction of their professional development allowance for the production of one teacher one laptop meanwhile the laptops are not made available to them.
Information gathered by Educegh.com from the various teacher unions indicates that the production of the one teacher one laptop initiative was funded from teachers’ contribution of Tier 2.
It can be recalled that when innovative teacher union and the All Teachers Alliance Ghana ATAG threatened to sue the Ghana Education Service, management of the Ghana Education Service brought out a statement that the Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT, and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana CCTGH brought out the initiative that they need laptops for their members.
The Ministry of Education also brought out their statement proofing that it was the three Teacher unions Ghana National Association of Teachers GNAT, National Association of Graduate Teachers NAGRAT, and Coalition of Concern Teachers Ghana CCTGH that brought the initiative and when the ministry of Education told the teacher unions that the can’t afford the pre-financing of the laptops the three major teacher unions leaders went and took a loan from Teachers Tier 2 contribution to fund the production.
According to the Innovative Teachers union, because the three major teacher unions sought funds for the production of the one teacher one laptop initiative, they quickly went and brought KA Technology Ghana limited to produce the laptops. This clearly shows that the various teacher unions could have procured Dell Laptops or Toshiba or HP for their members but because of the greedy nature of GNAT, NAGRAT, and CCTGH leaders that is why they went and bought substandard laptops for their members.
