A Vision Born from Rowing
The journey of The Blades started when four dedicated rowers—one of whom became South Africa’s first Olympic rowing medalist—sought land to establish a new boat club. They discovered a charming plot with an old farmhouse, which soon became home to elite athletes training for national and international competitions. One such athlete, Sizwe Ndlovu, went on to win gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
As time passed, the dream expanded beyond rowing. By 2006, plans for a few conference rooms had grown into a full-scale hotel and event venue. With the support of the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and its shareholders, The Blades officially opened its doors in 2010, offering top-tier accommodations, conference facilities, and a serene retreat in nature.
A Unique Blend of Sport and Hospitality
The Blades stands out not only for its stunning location but also for its deep connection to rowing. The architecture and décor subtly reflect this sporting legacy, making it a special place for both athletes and guests. Even today, rowers launch their boats from the lush banks of the property, continuing the tradition that inspired its creation.
Resilience and Growth
Like many in the hospitality industry, The Blades faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with unwavering support from its partners, the venue has undergone a remarkable transformation. From upgraded facilities to refreshed décor, every detail has been refined to enhance the guest experience.
In 2023, The Blades played a key role in hosting the World Masters Rowing Regatta—the first international rowing event on African soil—further cementing its place in South Africa’s tourism and sporting landscape.
