Kyingakrom Methodist basic school is one of the schools in Kintampo south district of the Bono East Region in Ghana, this school is made up of both kindergarten, primary and junior high school with a total population of three hundred and twenty (320) pupils of which boys are one hundred and ninety-eight and one hundred and twenty-two are girls with only three classroom blocks and the rest under what we called schools under trees.
REASONS WHY STUDENTS FIND IT DIFFICULT TO ATTEND SCOOLS IN THE RAINY SEASONS
This baffles my mind and sometimes I feel like crying whenever I visit these so-called classrooms where the children we called our future leaders are seated to learn with nothing fencing them like a building. Not forgetting about the popular saying that a school is a fours walls building with tomorrow inside. Then I ask does it mean that our future leaders of Kyingakrom Methodist basic school have no tomorrow.? Below are the aforementioned reasons why the pupils of the noble institution Kyingakrom Methodist Basic School children do not attend school on rainy days:
The main issues under the discussion of this topic are that the school has only three classroom block accommodating about three and twenty school children this is a disturbing situation in Kyingakrom Methodist Basic School. Base on my consultation with the school authority and community leaders has revealed that these three classroom blocks accommodate only kindergarten, class one (1), and class two (2) with the remaining classes seating under trees to learn with animals and people passing by and with all the noise disturbing the pupils from listening to their class teachers. This is a worrying situation to both the teachers and pupils of this school and which affect negatively the performance of the pupils in these communities. Because there is no classroom block that can serve as shelter to this school-going child from class three to junior high level always make these children stop attending school when clouds are formed. Meanwhile, their counterparts in the various cities and towns are attending their classes each and every blesses day and at the end, they will all write a standard exam. This is a delicate issue that needs to be looked at properly.
Inadequate furniture is also one of the problems facing rural communities in Ghana. Our source has stated that pupils in these communities do seat on stones with their books on their legs to write or lie on the ground to write their exercises or follow lessons when teachers are teaching them. Due to the tiredness and boredom of these schools, children in these areas prefer not to attend schools at all. This goes a long way to affect their general performance at the end of their exams. As a concerned citizen and someone who has experienced this troubling and disturbing situation, I have decided to bring to bear these issues to get redress.
The attitude of some parents in these communities is also a factor necessitating to school children not to attend school. Most of these communities are farming communities making parents carry their children to farms when it rains and this makes schoolchildren stay away from school for a number of days and this causes poor performance of children in this community.
RECOMMENDATION
These rural communities’ schoolchildren are appealing to the organization bodies and governmental agencies to provide them with school buildings, furniture. There is a need to educate most parents in these areas about the importance of educating their children. Philanthropist and individual bodies should play their parts by supporting schools in their various communities by building schools, providing with furniture and also talking to these pupils parents in their communities to allow their children to be educated. Let’s come together as a family to educate our young ones for our tomorrow lies in their hands.
