A Brief History of Western Sydney University

Under the 1988 University of Western Sydney Act, WSU formally opened for business on January 1, 1989. Its origins, however, go considerably further back to the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, which was established in 1891.

WSU was first established as a federated university by the merger of Nepean College of Advanced Education and Hawkesbury Agricultural College. The institution was strengthened even more when the Macarthur Institute of Higher Education joined the network in November 1989.

The university experienced substantial change during the 1990s:

A thorough evaluation in 1995 produced an improved federated organization that permitted each campus to retain its independence while working toward shared objectives.

In order to better serve Western Sydney’s expanding population, WSU moved from a federated system to a single multi-campus university by 2001.

WSU now has six significant campuses:

  • Bankstown
  • The Blacktown
  • Campbelltown
  • Hawkesbury
  • The Parramatta
  • Penrith

This multi-campus strategy offers accessibility, flexibility, and a varied educational experience throughout the dynamic and culturally diverse Western Sydney area.
